Twenty years in medicine. The rest in remembering.

Vol. 01 · The Woman Beneath
Stephanie I. Byerly, MD
Hello, I’m Stephanie

My approach is to accompany individuals on their journey of personal growth toward their authentic selves.

For most of my life, I was very good at being fine. I built a career in medicine, learned to hold a room, and made myself useful to everyone but the woman underneath it all. The work I do now began as my own — the long, unglamorous practice of coming back to myself.

I accompany high-achieving women through that same return — not toward a better, more optimized version of themselves, but back to the one who was already there before the performing started. The nervous system is the doorway. Presence is the practice. The woman you find waiting is the one you were all along.

I learned to disappear long before I learned to heal.

Before the white coat. Before the conference stages. Before the title. There was a girl who learned, early, that being good was safer than being seen.

I shrank to fit. I made myself useful. I made myself excellent. I made myself anything other than the thing that hurt — and somewhere in the making, I lost the thread to the woman I was before the world told me who to be.

The numbing started early. The achieving simply hid it well.

Then one
quiet afternoon,
the mirror.

Twenty years into medicine, between patients, I caught my own reflection in a hallway mirror and did not recognize the woman in it. She was capable. Composed. Carrying everyone. She was also far away.

I had spent a life proving I was fine. The woman in the mirror was the first one I could not lie to.

That moment was not a breaking. It was a beginning.

The work of UNNUMB was born in that hallway.

And in the years of study, undoing, and remembering that followed. I trained in nervous-system science, identity work, somatic practice, and trauma-informed coaching. But more than anything, I learned to listen — to my own body first, and then to the women who came to me asking the same quiet question I once asked myself.

Is this all I am?

It is not. It never was. The woman in that hallway is the same woman now — only she is home in herself, and that has changed everything.

Meeting the whole woman,
exactly where she is.

Trauma is not only the catastrophic. It is also the quiet, daily teaching that your needs were inconvenient, your bigness was unsafe, your softness was a liability.

I work with women across the entire spectrum — from those who would never use the word, to those who know it intimately. The work is the same: meeting what was abandoned, and bringing her home. We do not lead with the wound. We lead with the woman beneath it.

A life made of small returns.

The work I do with women is the work I've done in my own life — slowing down, listening, choosing presence over performance. Outside the practice, I'm a mother, a partner, a friend, a reader, a long-walker. The small returns are where the rest of the work happens.

Let's talk. The work of becoming UNNUMB and fully alive.
